This is a PRIORITY NEED! Help the Lawrence Community Shelter (LCS) as a front desk receptionist at the Lawrence. You will be the first friendly face and voice while welcoming guests and taking inquiries over the phone!
Help maintain an environment that is prepared to welcome and interface with individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Aloha Volunteers play a CRUCIAL role in the homelessness response system by serving as direct point of contact for individuals seeking shelter, both over the phone and in person. Volunteers will assist and engage with guests entering and exiting the Shelter, as well as monitor the entrance to the building and the front room. LCS is committed to providing a safe environment in which guests can recover and begin to transition out of homelessness. Aloha Volunteers support staff as they help guests manage this transition.
This position involves ongoing interaction with clients at Lawrence Community Shelter, as well as close collaboration with staff advocates. The ideal volunteer should be comfortable working with shelter guests, and interaction with individuals experiencing homelessness. They should not hesitate to ask questions to clarify what people (clients and staff) need. Volunteers for this position should be prepared to adapt quickly to challenges that may arise at the Shelter, take direction from staff, anticipate the needs of staff, while also be self-directed and responsive to the environment.
Preferred (but not necessary!): Previous experience providing direct services to or volunteering directly with individuals experiencing homelessness.

This service opportunity REQUIRES AN ORIENTATION! Orientation dates are the following from 10AM-12PM: 10/12, 10/26, 11/9, 9/23, 12/7.
Following orientation, Aloha Volunteers must shadow a current Aloha Volunteer for one shift.
If you sign up for this event, you are automatically agreeing to attending the immediately preceding orientation. We will be sending your name (and email) to the service coordinator at Lawrence Community Shelter with the expectation that you will be attending that orientation! If you show up at the service event without having attended that orientation, you will not be allowed to volunteer.
