Help contribute to a safe and welcoming environment at the Lawrence Community Shelter (LCS) by supporting staff and guests!
Volunteers will directly assist LCS service staff and engage with guests, as well as take on regular maintenance or organizational tasks at LCS that help keep the environment clean, calm, and orderly. LCS is committed to providing a safe environment in which guests can recover and begin to transition out of homelessness. Volunteer advocates will support staff as they help guests manage this transition.
This position involves ongoing interaction with clients at Lawrence Community Shelter, as well as close collaboration with staff advocates. The ideal volunteer should be comfortable working with shelter guests and asking questions to clarify what people (clients and staff) need. Volunteers for this position should be prepared to adapt quickly to challenges that may arise at the Shelter, take direction from staff, anticipate the needs of staff, while also be self-directed and responsive.
Preferred (but not necessary!): Previous experience providing direct services to or volunteering directly with individuals experiencing homelessness.

This service opportunity REQUIRES AN ORIENTATION! Orientation dates are the following from 10AM-12PM: 10/12, 10/26, 11/9, 9/23, 12/7.
Following orientation, volunteer advocates must shadow a Direct Service Advocate or existing Volunteer Advocate for 2 hours.
If you sign up for this event, you are automatically agreeing to attending the immediately preceding orientation. We will be sending your name (and email) to the service coordinator at Lawrence Community Shelter with the expectation that you will be attending that orientation! If you show up at the service event without having attended that orientation, you will not be allowed to volunteer.
