Please email us at h4h@ku.edu if you are interested in this project! The next step in this process will be a very brief interview in person. You must let us know by Wednesday, October 16th.
Project description:
According to a 2017 Community Health Assessment conducted by the Douglas County Health Department, currently 10% (~10,000 people) in Lawrence and Douglas County do not have health insurance. The most highly-reported reason for the number of uninsured is due to its expense. Our mission is to improve access to information on reduced-cost health insurance plans that are made possible by the Affordable Care Act of 2010, and additionally help our local community enroll in these plans.
As a Hawks for Health Certified Application Counselor (CAC), you will be required to complete a 4-6 hour online training provided by the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services. You will also be required to attend an in-person training on October 26th from 2 - 4 p.m. The training will be at the Wyandotte County Health Department in Kansas City (we will offer rides to carpool!)
During the Open Enrollment Period, which lasts from November 1 - December 15, your role will be to help the Lawrence community enroll in reduced-cost health insurance. You are not allowed to advise clients you meet with, but rather provide them with completely objective information. You will be required to volunteer 2 - 4 hours per week, which can be anytime from 1 - 5 p.m., Monday-Friday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
