Lawrence prides itself in being recognized as a Tree City USA. Although only remnants of the original native oak-hickory forest still remain, and much of our tree cover is made up of prolific what are called "trash" trees like Siberian Elm, Silver Maple, Hackberry, and Tree of Heaven, there are quite a few high quality and beautiful hardwood trees in Lawrence. Various original oak species are scattered around town, and other valuable species include: Sycamore, Sugar Maple, Box Elder, Black Walnut, Spruce, Cottonwood, and Black Locust. Conducted through the Lawrence Parks & Recreation Department, this bus tour will explore some of the more rare trees like: Buckeye, Hickory, American Beech, Kentucky Coffeetree, Northern Catalpa, and many more. John Standing is the tour guide, who has studied trees for years, and has lead this tour before.
