The Lawrence Humane Society nurtures the human-animal bond by providing shelter, care, and advocacy for homeless and abused animals, as well as resources for the pets and people in our community.
There are numerous volunteer opportunities in the shelter, including:
- Animal Interactions – Help animals stay healthy and happy with dog walking, cat socializing, animal enrichment and training, personality testing, assisting in the spay/neuter clinic, taking animal photos for the website, transporting animals and more!
- Customer Service – Assist staff in adoptions, admissions and the retail store by providing friendly, efficient customer service to all members of the public.
- Behavior – Assist the behavior team with playgroups or working on specific behaviors on animals.
Lawrence Humane Society Rules and Requirements:
- Before working directly with animals, a minimum of four volunteer hours of Essential Shelter Help must be completed
- Volunteer shifts must be signed up for in advance
- Volunteers must sign/turn in waivers and pay a $15 volunteer fee at the beginning of their first volunteer shift
- Volunteers must clock in and out for all shifts
- Volunteers must wear volunteer t-shirt, long pants, and closed-toe shoes at all times during shifts

Our community partners rely on volunteers to facilitate and support their programs. Before signing up for a volunteer opportunity, please consider whether you have the time and capacity to serve. We understand that life happens, but please try your best to provide community partners with at least 48-hour notice if you need to cancel your volunteer shift.
If you plan to participate in long-term volunteering or service projects with our community partners, we highly recommend completing a Service Project Agreement to set clear expectations between you and the organization.
If you plan to use any service hours completed through our community partners for the Certificate in Service Learning service hour requirement, we recommend completing a Service Verification Form to ensure those hours can be verified by our team.
