Harvesters’ AmeriCorps Members work through our organization and network of agency partners in our mission “to feed hungry people today and work to end hunger tomorrow.” Responsibilities vary depending on your skills and strengths. Examples of service include:
  • Engaging other volunteers for recruitment/retainment
  • Educating the community and other volunteers on fighting hunger and basic nutrition
  • Working with partner agencies to provide direct food support to community members
  • Supporting and running Pantries and Mobile Food Distribution with stocking and distribution

Almost 2 out of 3 households served by Harvesters have to choose between food and medical care, and up to 1 in 6 children and 1 in 8 adults in the region is identified as being food insecure or malnourished. The goal at Harvesters is to provide these people across Kansas and Missouri with nutritious food and good nutrition education as part of a critical nationwide public health effort to support everyone living in America. (For more information, please visit www.Harvesters.org.)

Harvesters also provides AmeriCorps Members with:
  • Assistance in applying for SNAP supplemental food program which you may be entitled to
  • Personal support for career, professional, and personal development by a dedicated AmeriCorps Coordinator

  • Partner Agencies including Just Food and Heartland Care Cupboard in Lawrence, KS

If this sounds like a good fit for you, Dan Komiya-Fakhrai (dfakhrai@harvesters.org) is happy to set up a 20–30-minute phone screening to get you started on your path to service through AmeriCorps at Harvesters! After responding to this need, send Dan an email with your availability for a call as well as a copy of your resume.

Our community partners rely on volunteers to facilitate and support their programs. Before signing up for a volunteer opportunity, please consider whether you have the time and capacity to serve. We understand that life happens, but please try your best to provide community partners at least a 48-hour notice if you need to cancel your volunteer shift.

If you plan to participate in long-term volunteering or service projects with our community partners, we highly recommend completing a Service Project Agreement to set clear expectations between you and the organization.

If you plan to use any service hours completed through our community partners for the Certificate in Service Learning service hour requirement, we recommend completing a Service Verification Form to ensure those hours can be verified by our team.
