The Lawrence Breakfast Optimist Club is looking for volunteers for Book Buddies, a program that pairs you to read with a student at New York elementary.
Book buddies are needed now! To be a book buddy sign up with Linda at New York Elementary and she will assign you a book buddy. You get to choose the day of the week you wish to meet with your buddy. All book buddy time is during the student’s lunch hour. When you arrive at New York Elementary, you will need to sign in and get a visitor’s badge. Book Buddies either select a book from the library or allow their student to select a book from the library. (The librarian or librarian aide is a great resource). Then you will need to find a spot for you and your buddy to meet, eat and read. The student will go through the lunch line with their class pick up their lunch tray and any other items, then you will meet your buddy at the back of the cafeteria. Many students now are eating in their room as part of the Montessori structure, so ask Linda where to meet your book buddy. When your buddy meets you, you then will go to the spot you selected and have a wonderful time reading the book that either you or your buddy has chosen.
Location: New York Elementary, 936 New York St
Commitment: These are 1 year contracts. There is some flexibility for seniors (1 semester), just make sure you let them know beforehand.

1) Be sure to hit "respond" to this ongoing need so we can track your hours
2) Email lkucza@usd497.org and express interest in being a book buddy
3) You will also need to fill out a simple volunteer form when you go in for the first time (name, address, phone number, and email) --take your ID with you!
